Picking out a separate rod and reel can be fun, weighing the pros and cons of each, but it's easy to get a setup that isn't well mated. If you rod is too heavy, you won't have enough feeling, or on the flip side, if your reel is too light, you won't be able to battle the really large fish found in deep water. Often it's better to purchase a fishing rod and reel combo - that way, you can be sure that the rod and reel are perfectly paired, and you won't have to tell stories about "the one that got away".
